Summary: This sketch shows that SAT score might not be a good indicator for high school student's academic performance, compared to high school math and English scores.

My goal for this project is to analyze whether SAT score or high school scores can show the real academic achievement of high school students. I chose a dataset which contains GPA, SAT math and verbal and high school math and English scores and gender information of 234 high school students. My focus is primarily on comparing SAT math with high school math.

First, I created a scatter plot, which is normally used in statistics to tell the correlation between two variables. However, I found there is clearly no linear relation between both items, which means that either one of them is not a good indicator.

Then, I used different colors to indicate the high school science scores In most cases, there is a positive relationship between science score and math score, since math is the foundation of a science. I found that most lighter circles have the highest high school math but not necessarily SAT Math score.

Also, I set different sizes of circles based on their GPA. It shows that students with higher high school math scores usually have higher GPAs, but a large number of students have high GPAs do not have high SAT Math scores. Thus, high school math seems to be a better indicator for math.

For the verbal skills indicator, I drew bars for both SAT verbal and high school English scores. This shows that SAT verbal has a larger variance than high school English score, and students with higher GPA does not seem to have a higher SAT verbal scores. So, the reliable of SAT verbal is doubtful. However, more information are needed to justify the appropriateness of SAT verbal scores.
