AALAC Workshop
Data Science in the Liberal Arts
June 2
8-29, 2023
Bryn Mawr College

Registration (is FREE). If interested, please fill out the Registration Form at the link: CLICK HERE.

Description: The goal of this workshop is to help define the role of Computer Science programs/departments in the emerging Data Science programs at AALAC institutions. The practice of Data Science, while currently grounded in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics, spans and impacts intellectual enquiry in all disciplines across the campus.

This multi-day workshop will bring together faculty from Computer Science and other disciplines at AALAC colleges to examine, explore, and participate in the shaping of a vision for the education and scholarship of Data Science in liberal arts institutions. We invite faculty from colleges that have already implemented Data Science programs, as well as those who are either in the process of creating one, and those who are creating programs that are focused more on the Data Analytics domain.

This is a follow-up workshop to the 2021 DSLAC Workshop. Those who were unable to attend the 2021 workshop are also welcome.

Topics & Outcomes: We will primarily focus on curricular models, themes, and examplar courses implemented and/or planned in the near future.

Based on the discussions and deliberations we expect that an active working group or a community will be formed whose charge will be to create one or more white papers on the shape of Data Science curricula in the liberal arts with a particular eye toward the role of and impact on computer science programs.

Format/Dates/Times

This is an in-person only workshop for all attendees.

Co-Located Summer School in Data Science

The Foundations of Data Science Institute (FODSI) will be holding their Annual Summer School in Data Science at Bryn Mawr from June 27-28, 2023 (Link will appear here when available). All attendees to the DSLAC Workshop are also invited to attend any or part of the Summer School.

Logistics

All attendees will be provided with single occupancy dorm rooms from Wednesday, June 28-30 on campus (or earlier if planning to attend the Summer School as well). Cost of all lodging and meals will be covered.

Travel funds are available but limited. We will try to cover travel costs for most/several attendees. Please indicate interest during registration (see below).

Arrivals/Departures

Please take a look at the skeletal schedule and plan your arrival for the morning/early afternoon of Wednesday, June 28. Departures can be in the evening of Thursday, June 29 or on Friday, June 30.

Bryn Mawr, PA is located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. If flying, please book travel to/from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). The airport is ~22 miles from campus. If using Uber, please use the address:
